Five years ago, I decided to leave a great job with a Fortune 500 company, to venture out on my own and pursue my dream of owning my own business. Like many would-be entrepreneurs, I had great passion, and big ideas to go with it! But passion and big ideas, I soon discovered, are simply not enough. In fact, working hard and knowing how to accomplish a technical task well, is also not enough.

Entrepreneurs Wear Many Hats
Indeed, in order to be successful as an entrepreneur and business owner, you have to wear many hats and be able to do many things well. In addition to the technical know-how that it takes to produce your product or deliver your service, you have to learn how to manage the other vital aspects of your business. These areas include finance and accounting, human resources, customer service and, of course, sales and marketing.

And on top of needing to manage all these areas of our business, we must also play the role of the enterprise leader or visionary, whose job it is to chart the direction of the business 3, 5 or even 10 years into the future. In other words, you have to think. not only as a technician or manager, but also like an entrepreneur, who orchestrates ALL aspects of her business and labors to build a World Class Company.

When I first started out five years ago, I really didn't understand how to run a successful company. I certainly worked hard and sacrificed, but because I didn't understand how to manage all areas of my business, I found myself on an increasingly difficult and uphill climb. It wasn't until I educated myself and decided to practice the disciplines of being an entrepreneur, that things began to improve.
